- HotBot — Wired's search engine. It WAS hot. Then Google killed it.
- Lycos — A dog in a tuxedo. 500-pound labrador. Most popular search engine of 1997.
- Excite — Stanford-y aggregation startup. Their main page was sick in 1996.
- Ask Jeeves — Ask a butler a question. Mostly useless but fun. (RIP May 2026 — Jeeves finally clocked out.)
- Northern Light — A search engine that was actually pretty good. RIP.
- WebCrawler — The original meta-search. Sold to Excite. Now AOL garbage.
- Infoseek — "Better Web, Better World." Acquired by Disney. Then went nowhere.
